New Delhi: Ramesh Chandra Majumdar, commonly known as RC Majumdar is one of the greatest historians of India. Apart from being a historian, he was also a professor who promoted Hindu nationalist views. He mainly studied India’s history and unveiled various unknown facets of our culture and heritage. Today is his birth anniversary and on this day, we take a look at the life and works of this famous historian.

The early life of Ramesh Chandra Majumdar

Born on December 4, 1888, in Gopalganj which was then in the Bengal Presidency, RC Majumdar studied in several schools in Kolkata and Dhaka. In 1905, he passed his Entrance Examination from Cuttack’s Ravenshaw College. In 1907, he passed F.A. from Surendranath College with a first-class scholarship and joined Presidency College. In 1911, he passed with M.A. in History.

The career of Ramesh Chandra Majumdar

Majumdar first became a lecturer at Dhaka’s Government Teachers’ Training College. He was a history professor at the Calcutta University for seven years since 1914. In 1921, he became history professor at the Dacca University and later became its Vice Chancellor. He was the Indian History Congress’s General President.

The works of Ramesh Chandra Majumdar

Majumdar researched on ancient India and travelled extensively to Southeast Asia. After a detailed research, he wrote detailed histories of Suvarnadvipa, Kambuja Desa and Champa. He edited a multi-volume tome on Indian history. From 1951, he worked for 26 years and described in eleven volumes the history of the people of India from the Vedic Age till Independence.

He also wrote ‘The History of the Freedom movement in India’ in three volumes. He was a principal memver of the government editorial committee to author a history of India’s freedom struggle. But he had a conflict with Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, then Education Minister on the Sepoy Mutiny, left and published his ‘The Sepoy Mutiny & Revolt of 1857’. He opined that the freedom struggle of India began with the Indian middle-class educated in English and the freedom struggle began in 1905 with the Partition of Bengal movement. His other important books are ‘The Early History of Bengal’, ‘Outline of Ancient Indian History’ and ‘Arab Invasion of India’.
