Tiger versus Lion: Who would win in a one-on-one fight?

New Delhi: Tiger and lion are the two names which would inevitably come to our mind when we talk about the strongest and most dangerous predators on land. Both these creatures are extremely powerful and agile, making them feared and giving them a regal air, the rulers of the jungle. However, a throne can never have two rulers. There has been a perennial question that who would win in a one-on-one fight between a tiger and a lion. Well, let us take a look at it.

Tiger vs Lion: Who would in a one-on-one fight?

Well, both are ferocious predators with immense strength. Almost all the animals in a territory are wary of them and like to keep a safe distance. Certain animals that roam in herds, especially elephants have been marked as those creatures which can take these hunters on. But what happens when a tiger and lion face each other without any outside support? Who would take the crown of being the king of the jungle?

In all probability, the fight would be won by a tiger, keeping aside the factors of the conditions of the particular lion and tiger involved in the fight. Generally, tigers tend to be larger than lions with more powerful muscles. While lions live in pride with up to 15 members and often hunt in groups to bring down large prey, tigers are solitary hunters and are the largest cats in the world, also famous for their speed, agility, and stealth.

Tigers are heavier

While an adult lion can weigh between 330 and 550 pounds, tigers are massive in size, with some individuals weighing up to 650 pounds. Also, when it comes to agility, lions can clock a top speed of 50 mph while tigers can reach up to 60 mph. Also, tigers have more muscle mass are also more agile and have a better reaction time. And due to their habit of being solitary hunters as opposed to the group hunting of the lions, a one-on-one fight is something which is just right up its alley.

In a famous incident, a tiger at the Ankara Zoo in 2010 entered a lion’s exhibit and severed the latter’s jugular with one single sweep. Craig Saffoe, a biologist at the Smithsonian Zoo, told LiveScience that tigers tend to be more aggressive and directly go for the kill while lion mainly tries to use its strength to pound its prey, taking its time. According to other researchers, in a fight between an African lion and a Bengal tiger, there is a 90 per cent chance that the tiger will win.

Things to remember

However, do remember that the fights in the wild are unpredictable and do not depend on a set formula. There, the fight depends on the terrain, the age and physical condition of the animals, and whether they have companions. While a tiger tends to hunt alone, a lion hunts in group. And if a tiger falls in front of a group of lions, there can be only two outcomes: Either it can die, or it can perish. So, if you are thinking about putting money into the fight between the two kings, think again. It won’t be straightforward in the respective domains.
