New Delhi: Team India star Virat Kohli had a forgettable tour of Australia as India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 3-1 after suffering a crushing 6-wicket defeat in the fifth Test in Sydney on Sunday, January 05. The expectations were high from Kohli heading into the much-anticipated series but the star batter failed to replicate his past heroics in Australia as he ended the tour after enduring a dismal run.
Kohli started the series by getting dismissed cheaply on just 5 runs in India’s first innings of the series opener in Perth. However, he bounced back strongly with an unbeaten ton in the second innings. But Kohli failed to capitalise as he struggled for consistency in the remainder of the series and finished with only 190 runs in 5 Tests at a disappointing average of 23.75.
Barring his hundred in the first Test in Perth, Kohli was continuously troubled by the Australian pacers, who exploited his weakness in the outside-off channel. While he finished with 105 runs in the first Test in Perth, Kohli managed only 85 runs in the next four Test matches, highlighting his struggles Down Under and raising questions over his long-term future for India in the longest format.
Virat Kohli hits a new low
Kohli hit a fresh low in his Test career after his awful show in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 as he ended the 2024-25 Test season with as many as 10 single-digit scores, the joint-highest by any batter while batting in the top seven in a season. Indian captain Rohit Sharma wasn’t too far behind as he too recorded ten single-digit scores in the 2024-25 Test season.
Kohli’s average of 23.75 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia is the third-lowest by any batter in a Test series where they scored an unbeaten century (minimum six innings). Only South Africa’s Aubrey Faulkner (19.40) and England’s Frank Woolley (23.25) have ended a Test series with an average lower than that of Kohli while batting in the top 7 for at least six innings.
Kohli’s Test career is hanging by a thread after his disastrous tour of Australia and it remains to be seen if the star batter will be the first-choice for India when they travel to England later this year for their next Test assignment. Kohli might have to go back to domestic cricket to find his form if he aspires to keep his spot in India’s Test squad for the new WTC cycle.
