New Delhi: Merseyside club Everton have announced the departure of manager Sean Dyche after less than two years in charge of the club. The Englishman took charge of the Toffees on January 30, 2023 after the exit of former boss Frank Lampard and kept the side afloat in the Premier League amidst challenging times under former owner Farhard Moshiri. However, his time at the Goodison Park has now come to an end following the takeover of new owners, The Friedkin Group.
The club’s American owners, who also own Serie A club AS Roma, were expected to make changes after the takeover was complete but the timing of Dyche’s exit comes as a shock. While Dyche’s exit always seemed on the cards, the decision to announce his departure mere hours before the club’s FA Cup third round clash against Peterborough United is a puzzling one. Club legend and U18s coach Leighton Baines is slated to lead the side into the encounter later tonight.

His tenure, though brief, was marked by significant challenges, including keeping Everton in the Premier League last season despite two points deductions for breaching the league’s profitability and sustainability rules. However, a dismal run of form this term has left the club languishing in 16th place, just one point above the relegation zone. The Toffees haven’t won a league game in over a month and have only scored one goal in their last five league games.
While Dyche did well to shore up their defense, as it was expected from the ‘Ginger Mourinho’, his side’s struggles infront of goal costed him his job ultimately. They’ve only scored 15 goals in the league this season, the second least of all teams in the league and that negates their good defensive record. Fans had been growing frustrated with Dyche’s style of play and following only three league wins in the season, the club’s new owners decided to part ways with the manager.

Former AS Roma manager, Jose Mourinho has recently emerged as the shock favourite for the Everton job in the hours leading up to Sean Dyche’s departure. The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss, who is currently in charge of Turkish side Fenerbahce has previously worked with Everton’s new owners during his time in Italy. While that tenure ended on a sour note, Mourinho guided Roma to their first major trophy in years during his time and could be tempted to a return to a league he’s so familiar with.
The Friedkin Group is expected to announce Dyche’s replacement in the coming days now and will be looking to bring in someone of their own choosing. Various other names have been linked with the Merseyside job and newly appointed West Ham manager Graham Potter was also being considered by the Toffees. The other favourite currently is former Everton manager David Moyes, who is currently available but TFG are expected to try for a big name like Edin Terzic or the recently departed AC Milan head coach, Paulo Fonseca
