VHT 2024-25: Karun Nair shatters List A world record with third consecutive century

New Delhi: Vidarbha captain Karun Nair broke the world record with his third consecutive hundred in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh batted first and scored 307 runs in the 50 overs.

Sameer Rizvi scored 105 runs off 82 balls with the help of seven maximums and five boundaries while Madhav Kaushik also scored 41 runs off 66 balls. Priyam Garg (34), Shivam Mavi (33) also made crucial contributions with the bat for Uttar Pradesh and helped the team post a respectable total on the scoreboard.

Chasing the massive target of 308 runs, opener Yash Rathod scored an unbeaten 138 runs off 140 balls with the help of 15 boundaries and one maximum while Karun Nair also notched up his third consecutive hundred in the tournament.

Karun Nair’s world record

The Vidarbha captain scored a mountain of runs before UP’s Atal Bihari Rai removed him in the ongoing tournament but not before he broke the world record. He was dismissed for the first time in the tournament across five matches as Vidarbha stands at the top of the Group E points table with 20 points.

Nair started the tournament with an unbeaten 112 against Jammu and Kashmir after that he scored an unbeaten 44 against Chattisgarh. He then smashed 163* and 111* in his last two matches against Chandigarh and Tamil Nadu.

When Nair crossed the 70-run mark against UP, he became the first Indian batter to score 500 runs without getting out across innings. Nair also surpassed New Zealand all-rounder James Franklin’s record of 527 runs before scoring his seventh List A century, four of which came in this season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

He ended his 11-year association with Karnataka last season before switching to Vidarbha in 2023. Delhi Capitals brought him for Rs 50 Lakh during the IPL 2025 Mega Auction in Saudi Arabia. He became only the second Indian batter in 2016 to smash a triple century in Test cricket, scoring an unbeaten 303 against England in Chennai.
