New Delhi: Two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka fended off Jessica Bouzas Maneiro to enter the Australian Open’s third round but fifth seed Zheng Qinwen was sent packing by Laura Siegemund on Wednesday.
World No.1 Sabalenka defeated 54th-ranked Spaniard Bouzas Maneiro 6-3, 7-5 on Rod Laver Arena, fighting back from 2-5 down in the second set to win in 1 hour and 34 minutes.
However, last year’s finalist Zheng couldn’t stave off German veteran Siegemund, falling 7-6(3), 6-3 on John Cain Arena, to become the first major seed in the women’s section to get beaten at Melbourne Park.
