New Delhi: Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is reportedly said to be named as the new captain of IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the next season (IPL 2025). The move comes after the Haridwar-born player was sold for a record-breaking bid of INR 27 crore to the RPSG Group-owned franchise in the IPL mega auction in November last year.
Although the official announcement is yet to be made by the franchise, a report from ESPNcricinfo mentioned that the 27-year-old will be the new captain of LSG. Pant will replace KL Rahul as the LSG skipper after the latter led the team in 37 matches across three seasons (2022-2024). Rahul was released from the LSG squad ahead of the IPL auction, where he was bought by Delhi Capitals for INR 14 crore.
Rishabh Pant’s years with Delhi Capitals
Pant played for his home-grown franchise Capitals in 111 matches from 2016 to 2024 across eight IPL seasons. With 3284 runs at a strike rate of 148.93, Pant left the franchise as their highest run-scorer. He also led the team in 43 matches in three seasons, having won 23 and lost 19 with a win percentage of 53.48.
Reports mentioned that his departure from the Delhi outfit was because the team management didn’t wanted to continue with him as the captain. Many believed that Pant wanted higher salary and that’s why he jumped into the auction. But then the player himself revealed that money was never a question behind his release from the Capitals, though he didn’t mention the exact reason.
West Indies power-hitting batter Nicholas Pooran, who led the Lucknow team in one match in IPL 2024 in Rahul’s absence, was considered as one of the contenders for the captaincy post with Pant being the other.
Pant will be working with head coach Justin Langer and new team mentor Zaheer Khan. LSG has the services of David Miller, Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Ayush Badoni, Avesh Khan, Mayank Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, and Mohsin Khan as the core strength for the IPL 2025.
