New Delhi: Eleven months after suffering a severe head injury during a league game in France, Honduran international Alberth Elis is scheduled to return to his own country to continue his career. The 28-year-old forward, who began his professional career with Olimpia, one of the top teams in Honduras, has agreed to a one-year contract. In February 2024, while playing for Bordeaux in a French second-tier match, Elis collided with an opponent, resulting in emergency surgery and an induced coma.
All of it happened in the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, where the Honduran international was taken out on a stretcher in front of his own fans, who were shocked to witness the event, as he collided with Guingamp defender Donatien Gomis just 40 seconds into the match. After the incident, Elis was taken to the hospital and had surgery overnight, according to Bordeaux, who defeated Guingamp 1-0 in that game.
That season, he was indeed a crucial player for a disaster-struck Bordeaux side where he scored five goals and provided two assists in 21 games. He also had a loan spell at Brest before joining Bordeaux before the horrific incident happened. However, the loan spell didn’t quite workout at the time, but with his return, he seemed to be the man for Bordeaux. Before being released from the hospital, he stayed for a month. Elis stated in a November interview with The Athletic: “When I woke (from the coma) I didn’t remember that I was a footballer.”

In that same interview, he said that he couldn’t recall that he was Honduran or that he was in France. According to him, the physicians said that his recovery would be challenging due to the seriousness of the knock.
“The first two weeks were difficult, because mentally I wasn’t 100%. But day by day, I started to get better.”
Elis also disclosed that he needed assistance to regain the writing and reading abilities he “lost in large parts” following his injuries. Bordeaux’s financial troubles caused them to slip to the fourth division and adopt amateur status, leaving him without a club while he recovered and considered playing again. Before relocating to France, Elis had stints performing in Portugal, the United States, and Mexico.
Honduras forward Alberth Elis miraculously made his comeback to the first team after a horrific 18 months where he was in coma after suffering a head injury back in February last year. Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
