New Delhi: Former Indian badminton player Anup Sridhar has been appointed as the singles coach of the Singapore badminton team. As per a report by Channel News Asia, the Singapore Badminton  Association (SBA) has appointed the 41-year-old from Bengaluru in Karnataka as a support staff.

The move is subjected to the successful application of an employment pass, as reported by the publication aforementioned.

If the move is successful then Sridhar will be working under Singapore badminton head coach Kim ji-hyun. Kim will continue in the role of head coach for the singles players – both men’s and women’s teams – while the Indian coach will be there to offer his assistance, as mentioned by David Tan, SBA vice-president of business development and communications.

“Our national team is made up of players at different development stages and world-ranking levels, and therefore have different coaching, training and competition needs. We are looking to address this by bringing in more coaches with different abilities,” Tan explained.

The requirement for the additional singles coach was a minimum of five years’ of experience of coaching experience with a national team with experience in singles’ domain precisely. Sridhar has worked with the likes of India’s double-Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lakshya Sen in the Indian national setup. He was the coach of PV Sindhu for the European tour post Paris Olympics.

The former Indian shuttler impressed the Singapore sporting body with the analysis of strengths and shortcomings of the top players in the current BWF circuit.

Sridhar was a former Indian player, who played in the men’s singles event. He was the captain of India’s Thomas Cup team in the editions of 2006 and 2008, and participated at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He maintained as the nation’s top-ranked singles player from 2005 to 2008. The Karnataka player was also conferred with Arjuna Award by the Government of India in 2008.
