‘Mahi, Rohit, Rishabh’: Sanjeev Goenka’s bold prediction about Pant’s LSG captaincy

New Delhi: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner on Monday made a bold prediction about the franchise’s new skipper Rishabh Pant during the press conference for the team’s captaincy announcement for the Indian Premier League (2025). Pant was announced as the captain of LSG for IPL 2025 by franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka on Monday, January 20.

The explosive wicket-keeper, who was bought by the franchise for a record-breaking Rs 27 crore, batter replaced KL Rahul as LSG skipper. Rahul, who was not part of the LSG retention list, was released by the franchise in the auction pool.

Pant became the most expensive in the history of IPL after LSG broke the bank for the left-handed batter, winning the bidding war against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Delhi Capitals (DC). Pant, who was released by DC ahead of the mega-auction, led the Delhi-based franchise in IPL 2021, 2022, and 2024.

During the press conference, Goenka hailed the leadership of Pant, who will be playing his second season of IPL after surviving a life-threatening accident in December 2022.

‘Mahi, Rohit, Rishabh’

Goenka predicted a bright future for Pant both as a player and a captain and said that he expects Pant to play IPL for the next 10-15 years and win at least 5-6 titles. He further claimed that a day will come when Pant’s name will be mentioned in the same breath as Rohit Sharma and Mahendra Singh Dhoni – the two most successful IPL captains.

“He (Pant) will play 10-15 years. During that time he can win at least 5-6 IPL titles. People will say, ‘Mahi, Rohit, Rishabh’,” said Goenka.

Both Rohit and Dhoni have won five titles as captains. While Rohit led Mumbai Indians to five titles, Dhoni captained Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to win in five IPL campaigns.

Goenka also said that he wants to build a team where mutual trust is at the forefront and wants to see the players learning to take defeat with victory.
