Manchester United appoint former Portuguese International Ruben Amorim as head coach

New Delhi: Ruben Amorim has been announced as the next manager of Manchester United and will start leading the club from November. Amorim will arrive from Sporting Lisbon, who have received €10 million as compensation from the United. Amorim has been at the helm of Sporting for four years, having led them to their first Portuguese League title in 19 years in his first season.

The 39-year-old will arrive to the most successful club in the Premier League, having claimed 13 titles in the top-tier of English football. However, their poor performance in the last two seasons resulted in Erik ten Hag’s dismissal from the club. Ruud van Nistelrooy was appointed as the interim manager following the dismissal of the Dutchman.

Ten Hag led the club to 2023 League Cup glory and the FA Cup win in 2024. However, the 54-year-old manager came under scrutiny after United finished eighth in the Premier League, their lowest finish since the league’s inception. Amorim will be the sixth permanent to take over as United’s manager since Sir Alex Ferguson ended his 26-year stint with the club and retired in 2013.

The Portuguese manager is one of the most sought-after young coaches in Europe, and his first assignment with United will be against the newly promoted team Ipswich Town right after the international break in November. His first game at Old Trafford will be against Norwegian club Bodo/Glint in the Europa Cup, followed by game Everton in the Premier League the following weekend.

For now, Amorim’s coaching staff hasn’t been announced by United. The former Braga manager has led Sporting through a 14-game unbeaten streak after losing to Porto in the Portuguese Super Cup. It has been reported that Joao Pereira could be replacing Amorim. United are currently placed 14th in the Premier League and are searching for their first win in the Europa Cup. They have, however, reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup under Van Nistelrooy this week.

Ruben Amorim will takeover as Manchester United’s next manager after successful stint with Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
