Woman detected with HMPV infection, second case in Assam this season

New Delhi: A 75-year-old woman in Guwahati has been diagnosed with human metapneumovirus (HMPV), marking the second case of the virus in Assam this season. She is receiving treatment at a private hospital, where she has been placed in isolation. Her condition is reported to be stable, according to a PTI report.

A hospital official stated, “The woman was admitted a few days ago, and routine tests confirmed the HMPV infection.” However, there has been no official confirmation from the state government.

Earlier this month, a 10-month-old child from Lakhimpur was identified as the first HMPV case of the season. The child was treated at the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.

HMPV affects individuals of all ages

HMPV is a respiratory virus affecting individuals of all ages, particularly during winter and early spring. While the infection is generally mild and self-limiting, most patients recover without complications.

HMPV is known to cause mild respiratory infections and is not typically a cause for serious concern, although it can affect people of all ages.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is not a newly discovered virus. First identified in the Netherlands in 2001, it has been circulating globally for decades. Belonging to the same family as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), HMPV is known to cause respiratory illnesses.

A 75-year-old Guwahati woman has been diagnosed with human metapneumovirus (HMPV), the second case in Assam this season. Earlier, a 10-month-old from Lakhimpur tested positive. HMPV causes respiratory illness, usually mild, with most patients recovering independently.  Health Health News: Latest News from Health Care, Mental Health, Weight Loss, Disease, Nutrition, Healthcare
