New Delhi: Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund have fallen off badly from the lofty heights they reached last season. The German club were the finalists of the UEFA Champions League in their previous campaign and managed a respectable fifth place finish in the Bundesliga under Edin Terzic. The lifelong Dortmund fan then left the club in the summer, and things began going downhill for the club.
Terzic had brought in former Dortmund player and fan favourite midfielder, Nuri Sahin back to the club as his assistant and Sahin was promoted to become the first team manager following Terzic’s exit. His career as Dortmund’s manager started off well with a five game unbeaten run before a heavy 5-1 loss to VfB Stuttgart. He followed that up with a thrashing of his own as Dortmund beat Celtic 7-1 in the UEFA Champions League, but things went south following that win.
Sahin could only manage six wins in his next 19 games as Dortmund manager, ending his career at the club with a four game losing streak. BVB are currently sat 10th in the Bundesliga table, seven points behind the final UCL spot. Following their defeat to Bologna last night, automatic qualification to the next round also looks difficult for the club and they need to get their next managerial appointment right to lift their season. Here’s a list of potential replacements the club can look at to replace Nuri Sahin in the dugout!
5) Felix Magath
🚨 Felix Magath has been internally discussed as an intern option until the end of the season.
Several amongst the board are said to be intreged by his ‘brutal’ style.

German manager Felix Magath is a surprise name being linked with the BVB job following the sacking of Nuri Sahin. The former Bayern Munich manager is a veteran of the Bundesliga and will be the polar opposite of Sahin, who was a complete newbie in management. Magath is a well respected name in Germany having won three Bundesliga titles and a UEFA Euro during his time as a player while also winning three Bundesliga titles as manager.
What makes his inclusion a surprise one is that the 71-year-old has been out of management for quite a while now. He last took charge of a club in 2022, when he managed Hertha Berlin for just nine games. Even that stint came after a gap of five years with his previous managerial appointment being that of Chinese Super League club Shandong Taishan during the 2016/17 season. Dortmund are reportedly considering Magath as an interim option before going for a permanent solution in the summer.
4) Roger Schmidt
🚨👀 It would take significant convincing to persuade Roger #Schmidt to take over a club at this moment.

Former Benfica manager Roger Schmidt is seen as a dream target internally by the club and the German manager is currently unattached following his departure from Benfica in 2024. However, the belief internally at the club is that it’d be difficult to get Schmidt in the middle of the season as the German manager would want to wait for the summer before taking up a new role.
Dortmund based newspaper Ruhr Nachrichten claim that the club are looking for German speaking managers and Schmidt fits the bill and is also someone who has previous experience of the Bundesliga. He was previously in charge of Bayer Leverkusen for three years and helped the club to a fourth and third place finish in his two full seasons in charge of the club. He was last in charge of Benfica, where he maintained a win percentage of almost 70% while also guiding them to the 2022/23 Premeira Liga title.
3) Niko Kovac
🚨⚫️🟡 Niko #Kovac is one of the candidates for Borussia Dortmund, as revealed on Monday. He has been discussed internally and would be immediately available.

Former Bayern Munich and AS Monaco manager Niko Kovac is another German speaking manager that is being considered by Dortmund to replace Nuri Sahin. German newspaper Bild reports that the club are interested in bringing Kovac to the club and reportedly contacts have been made between the two parties. Kovac has significant Bundesliga experience under his belt and would be immediately available for Dortmund.
Kovac has been in charge of various Bundesliga clubs like Bayern Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt and most recently VfL Wolfsburg but has been without a club since being sacked from Wolfsburg in March 2024. He has won the domestic treble with Bayern Munich in the 2018/19 season while also guiding Frankfurt to the DFB-Pokal a year prior. Bild reports that the club are seeking to offer him an interim role currently before evaluating it in the summer and it would be a smart choice to do so considering he’s been out of work for almost a year.
2) Sebastian Hoeneß
Should Borussia Dortmund decide in favour of a short-term solution in the event of Nuri Sahin’s dismissal, Sebastian Hoeneß is one of the top candidates in the summer.

Current VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeneß is one name that continues to be linked with any top job following his exploits with the German club. The son of Bayern Munich legend Dieter Hoeneß and nephew of Uli Hoeneß, the 42-year-old is one of the most exciting young managers coming up in Germany. He started his career with the youth team of Bayern Munich before moving to TSG Hoffenheim and then joining Stuttgart.
He made a name for himself at Stuttgart, guiding the club to a second place finish in Bundesliga last season, above the likes of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. He has continued his impressive form this season as the club are currently sitting fourth in the league and on course for another UEFA Champions League finish. The stumbling block could be the reported €7-8 million fee that any club needs to pay to get him out of his contract at Stuttgart and that would only be active in the summer.
1) Erik Ten Hag

Former Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag remains one of the favourites to replace Nuri Sahin at the club. The former Ajax manager was recently sacked from Old Trafford following a poor start with the club but could be an excellent option for Borussia Dortmund. He has been free since the end of October and would be available to start immediately, making him an intriguing choice as well.
Ten Hag remains high on the list at Dortmund according to Sky Sports Germany and also speaks fluent German. He has recently been seen at Dortmund’s games and has a good relationship with Borussia Dortmund advisor Matthias Sammer. The former Dortmund player previously wanted to name him the Germany U21 manager during his time with the DFB. The duo worked together at Bayern Munich, where Ten Hag started his career and they could once again be united at Borussia Dortmund
