New Delhi: Weightlifter Popy Hazarika, a gold medal winner at Commonwealth Championships, headlines the latest list of athletes who have been caught in the doping net and get provisionally suspended.
Apart from Hazarika, U-20 hammer throw national champion Anshika Singh, and Senior National Open 1500m bronze medal claiming Sunita were also suspended by Natinal Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for testing positive to prohibited substances.
NADA released a list comprising 30 athletes across sports who were placed under provisional suspension. These sportspersons primarily belonged to athletics, weightlifting, wrestling and powerlifting though NADA didn’t provide details about their tests.
Hazarika had climed the gold medal in the 59kg category at the Commonwealth Championships in Noida in 2023, while Anshika won the hammer throw title in the National U-20 Championships last year.
Sprinter Anusha Biswas, a national U-20 medallist, was also named in the list of the suspended, which includee three minors athletes too.
India tops lost of shame
According to World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) 2022 testing figures, India has the highest percentage of dope cheats, with 127 testing positive for banned substances out of 4064 samples, which is 3.26 per cent of the sample size.
India were followed by South Africa (80 doping failures out of 4,169 samples tested, 2.04 per cent), followed by Thailand (65 cases out of 3402 samples, 1.93 per cent).
USA and Qatar were fourth and fifth on the list, respectively. The Indian samples were tested at New Delhi’s National Anti-Doping Laboratory (NDTL), which is situated in the premises of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Powerlifting: Popy Hazarika, Mohan Kumar, Ruturaj Prakash, Mohit Kumar, Aditya Sharma, Pratheeksha GN, Kchetrapal Singh, PV Manjesh, Pravati Singh, Honey Dabas (Para)
Wrestling: Gesu, Mohit Khokhar, Bunty, Gaurav Kumar, Ankit, Amit, Shubham Babaso, Savita.
Athletics: Muskan Rana, Manjeet Kumar Mahto, Sunita, Pranita Bavadekar, Mayank Yadav, Vijay Ramajayam, M Sathish Kumar, R Lavanya, Ravi, Aleena Vincent, Gulshan Dungdung, Anshika Singh, Anusha Biswas, Sipra Sarkar (participation during ineligibility period).
