New Delhi: Hobart Hurricanes clinched their maiden Big-Bash League title after registering a seven-wicket over Sydney Thunder in the final on Monday at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Nathan Ellis (3 for 23) and Riley Meredith (3 for 27) held Thunder to 185 for 3 after opting to field first.

Hurricanes opener Mitchell Owen scored a blistering century (108 off 42 balls) to lead the charge, smashing six boundaries and 11 sixes. Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade was unbeaten for a sparkling 17-ball 32 to finish the game in company of Ben McDermott, who hit the winning boundary, a scoop over short fine-leg.

BBL winners prize money

Hobart Hurricanes, the winners of the BBL 2024-25, took home the cash prize of Australian dollars (AUD) 500,000 (INR 2.75 crore) while the runners-up (Sydney Thunder) took the cash prize of AUD 250,000 (INR 1.37 crore). The third and fourth placed teams were given AUD 100,00 (INR 55 lakh), and the fifth team got AUD 30,000 (INR 16.5 lakh).

The player of the tournament (Mitchell Owen) was awarded AUD 10,000 (INR 5.5 lakh). The cash awards in BBL are decent but then its counterpart Indian Premier League (IPL) grants whopping amounts for the winners.

IPL winners prize money

The winner of IPL 2024 (Kolkata Knight Riders) bagged a massive cash prize of INR 20 crore. This is more than seven times greater in terms of the cash prize awarded to the BBL winner. The IPL runner-up earns INR 13 crore. The winner of the Orange Cap (highest run-scorer) and Purple Cap (highest wicket-taker) walk off with a prize of INR 15 lakh each.

The difference

The IPL was started in 2008 while the first season of the BBL kick-started in 2011. There is no doubt with India’s cricket-crazy status, the IPL has flourished by leaps and bounds with millions of viewers following the two-month long tournament. The IPL attracts lucrative sponsorship deals, heavy crowds (high ticket sales) and the most important, the broadcast rights, which makes the league not just the top cricket league but a premium global league. The cumulative brand value of the league is rising 13% to $12 billion, as reported by The Economic Times.

The Hobart Hurricanes secured their first Big Bash League (BBL) title, defeating the Sydney Thunder by seven wickets. Mitchell Owen’s century spearheaded their victory. This article details the BBL prize money distribution, comparing the winnings to the significantly larger sums awarded in the Indian Premier League (IPL), highlighting the disparity between the two leagues despite their similar formats.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
