Transfer spending rises compared to last winter spendings with a week left in the window

New Delhi: Premier League clubs have reportedly spent £247m this month with a week left, jumping up from the previous year’s £90m. According to data from Football Transfers, Manchester City have alone spent £125m, which the rest of the 19 teams put together have spent less. In 2023, the January window saw a record £815m and despite a week left, that record is expected to remain intact.

After the top-tier of English football, Ligue 1 has spent the most, standing at £106m, with more than half of the total being generated by Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratkhelia’s signing by PSG. English Championship clubs have spent £44m which is way higher than La Liga’s £2m spent during this period. League One side Huddersfield has alone spent £4m.

Why is there a jump in the winter transfer window spending?

Manchester City’s campaign this season has been marked with poor form in the top-flight and in the European, which explains Pep Guardiola’s club making some big signings with many more to come. City have brought Omar Marmoush for £59m from Eintracht Frankfurt, Vitor Reis from Palmerias for £29.6m and Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov for £33.6, which comprises most of the Winter window transfer spending. In fact, since signing Aymeric Laporte in 2018, City have never signed anyone in the winter transfer.

As noted by media outlet Football Transfer, in January 2023, the £815m was nearly 29.4 per cent of the revenue spent in the season. Chelsea spending £286m was a major factor for the spending along with teams in relegations like Leicester City, Southampton and Leeds making desperate moves along with Bournemouth and the total spending between them was £200m.

Of course, 2024 had a big restructuring with just £96m being spent owing to the PSR rules, with Everton and Nottingham already seeing points deduction due to breachings. This is being seen as one of the primary reasons that teams are restricting their spending to have buying power during the summer.

Currently, no clubs have breached the rules, with Manchester City becoming active owing to their low spending during the summer, giving them enough space from hitting the ceiling This is the reason that Manchester United have fallen on the other side of the spectrum. Liverpool on the other hand may have the budget for spending but they are still being thought of renewing their three powerhorses, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. Chelsea are a team that are looking for offloading, but for them too the better opportunity arises in the summer.

Premier League sides who have been recruiting actively

Manchester City are clearly the most active team in this window, becoming one of the three teams to sign three players during this period. Both Ipswich and Southampton are struggling in the relegation zone and have each signed three players during this period. Overall, there are nine Premier League signings exceeding £10m and City have three of the biggest ones to their name.

Ipswich Town have spent £20m to bring Jaden Philogene from Aston Villa who have themselves spent £19m to bring Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund. Next to this is Wolves paying £16.6m for Reims player Emmanuel Agbadou. Tottenham have signed goalkeeper £12.5m after Lillywhites struggled throughout the season with their showstoppers.

Brighton signed Inter Miami midfielder Diego Gomez, though the exact value of the deal is unknown, it has been estimated somewhere around £11m. Villa, Bournemouth and Spurs have each made two signings while Brentford, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Leicester, Nottingham Forest and Wolves have just signed one so far. Even Championship side Sheffield United have brought in Tom Cannon from Leicester.

So far title contenders Liverpool and Arsenal along with Chelsea and Manchester United have been amongst the eight teams who haven’t made any signings.

How rest of Europe is looking during January transfer window

The highest January signing in the world alongside Marmoush happens to be for Kvaratskhelia who has reportedly been bought for £59m. However, this is one of the rare instances with other European clubs not making much of the big signings.

After City’s three signings, the next highest signing is of Botafogo winger Luiz Henrique’s move to Russian club Zenit St Petersburg. Frankfurt had paid Marseille forward Elye Wahi £21.9m as a replacement for Marmoush. These are the only few of the £20m signings in the window so far not by a Premier League side.

There are still a lot of signings expected during this transfer phase. Manchester United will be looking to off-load Marcus Rashford who clearly doesn’t have a future in  Ruben Amorim’s side. United’s Alejandro Garnacho is also being linked for a move to either Chelsea or Napoli. The selling will help United to sign players that could work in Amorim’s tactical plans as they look to improve their Premier League standings.

Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta has said that they are also looking for a striker who can make an impact. RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, Wolves’ Matheus Cunha and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak are all linked with the Gunners.

Tottenham have been poorly hit by injuries and Ange Postecoglou believes that it is this that has led to their poor form in the season. While it may be an overstatement,  Tottenham do need players who can stop their descent into the relegation zone.
