New Delhi: Novak Djokovic has pulled out of Serbia’s Davis Cup tie against Denmark because of a hamstring injury. The 24-time Grand Slam winner retired with the injury issue after losing the first set of his Australian Open semi-final against eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev.

Djokovic was booed off the court by the fans last week after he retired hurt from his last-four clash against the German world number two.

Djokovic, disappointed by the treatment meted out to him by the fans at Melbourne Park, later posted a photo of an MRI taken of his left hamstring with the caption: “Thought I’d leave this here for all the sports injury ‘experts’ out there.”

Serbia will take on Denmark in a first-round qualifying tie, which begins on Friday.

Serbia captain Viktor Troicki was left disappointed by Djokovic’s absence but expressed confidence in his team. Without Djokovic, Serbia is set to face a difficult challenge against the Danes, who have Holger Rune in their ranks.

Another sign of the things to come for Djokovic?

Djokovic defied age and injury to pull off a miraculous win against the 21-year-old four-time Grand Slam winner when few had predicted it. Even most of his ardent fans feared the worst after the former world number one had lost the first and took a medical time-out against a player against who he had suffered losses in the previous two Grand Slam finals.

But Djokovic showed immense grit and hunger to keep his bid to win a record-extending 25th Slam after sealing a remarkable 11th semifinal berth at Melbourne Park.

The momentum of a sensational win and a 10-0 unbeaten record in the AO semifinal made him a hot favourite against second-seed Zverev but the 10-time Australian Open champion lost his battle with a leg injury and crashed out of the semifinal for the first time in 11 appearances.

Is the Davis Cup pull-out another sign of the things to come for the Serbian legend?
