New Delhi: On the request of organisers, yogasana and mallakhamb have been identified to become medal events from demonstration sports at the ongoing National Games.

Before start of the competition on January 28, the Indian Olympic Association classified them as demonstration sports, declaring in December that four such disciplines along with 32 core sports will be held the 38th edition of the National Games in Uttarakhand from January 28 to February 14.

But yogasana and mallakhamb were promoted to the medal sports section as per a media statement on Wednesday, with Kalarippayattu — a form of martial arts practiced in Kerala and rafting to remain as non-medal sports.

“Yes, they (yogasana and mallakhamb) were confirmed as medal sports by the IOA as the host (state) has a right to request two sports (as medal sports),” an IOA source was quoted as saying by PTI.

Yogasana derives from the physical aspect of yoga, where participants perform yogic postures to get judged on difficulty, balance, control, flexibility and endurance.

Mallakhamb is a traditional indigenous sport in which the contestants performs yogic postures and movements on a vertical wooden pole or a rope. It’s names originates from the words ‘malla’, meaning a wrestler and ‘khamb’, which means a pole.
