Rohit Sharma’s dismal run continues despite opening for India: What the pundits said?

New Delhi: India captain Rohit Sharma’s struggle with the bat continued in the fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday, 27 December. He promoted himself to the opening position after the poor performance in the middle order but was dismissed by Pat Cummins on 3 runs.

Australia bowled out for 474 runs in the first innings and in reply, India lost two wickets at tea on Day 2. Cummins removed Rohit in the second over of the innings. He bowled a short delivery outside the off stump and Rohit tried to play a pull shot but only managed to get a top edge of the bat and Scott Boland took a comfortable catch.

Rohit struggled to score runs in the home Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand. He missed the first Test due to the birth of his second child and batted in the middle order when he returned to the team during the pink-ball Test at the Adelaide Oval. He has scored only 152 runs in the last seven Test matches at an average of 11.69. In 2024, Rohit has played 13 Test matches and scored 607 runs, including two hundred and two fifties in 2024.

Here’s what pundits had to say after Rohit’s bizarre dismissal

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has said that it’s a sad state for the Indian skipper as he’s averaging just 11 in the last 14 Test innings.

“That is a really big mistake … it’s a nothing shot. He is just too early in the innings and hasn’t got used to the pace and bounce” said Former England captain Michael Vaughan on Fox Cricket.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has criticised Rohit for playing a lazy shot and Darren Lehmann also slammed the Indian captain for playing a poor shot.

“If he’s going to hit it, hit it Rohit. You’re a class player, you should actually take that on. Plenty of room in the outfield, take it on” Lehmann said on ABC Sport.

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar defended Rohit Sharma and said “That’s the shot he cannot resist playing”. He also said that if Rohit fails to score runs in the next couple of matches he might quit Test cricket.
