New Delhi: Tiger Woods is still coming to terms with the death of his mother and has withdrawn from Genesis Invitational, a tournament he was set to host this week.
Former World No. 1 Woods’ mother Kultida passed away last week, and he expressed “heartfelt sadness” while announcing the news through his social media accounts on February 4.
Three days after tournament organisers announced that Woods would play in the event at Torrey Pines, the 15-time major champion said he isn’t yet ready to return to action and needs more time to deal with his grief.
“I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready. I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss,” Woods wrote on social media platform X.
“Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my mom’s passing.”
Genesis Invitational is set to tee off on February 13 and stretch till Feb 16. This year’s edition was moved from the Riviera Country Club to Torrey Pines because of the Los Angeles wildfires.
The PGA Tour Signature Event offers a $20 million purse with proceeds going towards Woods’ TGR Foundation.
Out of action since last July
A car crash in February 2021 has limited Woods’ schedule in recent years. He was last seen at a PGA Tour event in July at the British Open where he missed the cut.
He underwent a lower back surgery in September and in December the 49-year-old said he was not sharp yet for tournaments after appearing alongside son Charlie in a 36-hole event in December.
Last month, he took part in the Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL), an indoor team golf league he founded.
