New Delhi: After Uttarakhand, another hill state is set to host the National Games as Meghalaya has been awarded the hosting rights for the next edition. The 39th edition of the National Games will be staged in February/March 2027 and will be played in Meghalaya. PT Usha, the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed the development on Tuesday.

PT Usha also informed the same to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who expressed his delight at the development. Sangma said it will be an honour for Meghalaya to host the next edition of the Games. The 38th edition is currently underway in Uttarakhand where athletes from across the nation are showcasing their skills and talent across sporting events.

After being awarded the hosting rights, Meghalaya will also be handed the IOA flag during the closing ceremony of the 38th edition of the National Games which is currently underway in Uttarakhand. The closing ceremony is set to take place in Haldwani on Friday, February 14. The National Games in Uttarakhand have been a huge success and Manipur would like to take a cue from their preparations and arrangements.

“I am pleased to inform you that the IOA has decided to allocate the hosting rights of the 39th National Games to the state of Meghalaya, scheduled to be held in February/March 2027,” IOA President Usha wrote in the letter to Sangma on Monday.

“Overjoyed to share that Meghalaya has been officially announced as host for the 39th National Games! Excited to join the Closing Ceremony of the 38th National Games at Uttarakhand to accept the IOA flag as the host for the next season of the National Games,” Sangma said in a tweet. He also shared the letter from Usha.

Records getting tumbled at National Games 2025

The ongoing 38th edition of the National Games in Uttarakhand has witnessed multiple Games and national records being broken by athletes across spring events. Around 10,000 athletes from 38 teams across the country are taking part in the National Games in Uttarakhand which is being hosted across six venues – Haridwar, Nainital, Haldwani, Rudrapur, Shivpuri and New Tehri.

Dehradun is the main city which is also holding the athletics events taking place in the Games. Recently, Madhya Pradesh’s Dev Meena etched his name in Indian athletics history by breaking the national record in men’s pole vault. Meena cleared the 5.32m mark in the men’s pole vault final in Dehradun on Monday to bag the elusive gold medal and break the previous record held by Siva Subramani (5.31m).

Earlier, Jyothi Yarraji and Tejas Shirse smashed the Games records in women’s 110m hurdles and men’s 100m hurdles, respectively to win gold medals. Yarraji, who represented India in the Paris Olympics last year, clocked 13.10 seconds in the women’s 110m hurdles final while Sirese won gold with a timing of 13.65 seconds.
