New Delhi: Haryana took a perfect revenge of their last edition loss as they defeated Madhya Pradesh 4-1 in the finale to win the women’s hockey gold medal at the National Games on Thursday. Madhya Pradesh’s Chavan Aishwarya scored off a penalty corner in the fifth minute of the game to give her side an early lead in the final contest.
MP side failed to capitalise on the advantage and allowed Haryana to score four goals, who won the contest eventually. Mahima Choudhary, Ishika and Monika scored the goals for Haryana at the Vandana Katariya Hockey Stadium on the concluding day of competitions. Mahima scored in the 37th minute while Ishika scored two goals in the 45th and the 50th minute of the game. Monika came with a late and last strike in the 55th minute of the crucial contest.
Jharkhand beat Maharashtra to bag bronze
Meanwhile, Jharkhand beat Maharashtra 2-1 to bag the bronze medal. Pramodni Lakra (12th minute) and skipper Albela Rani Toppo (17th minute) scored for Jharkhand while Tanushree Dinesh Kadu (39th minute) scored one goal for Maharashtra. In the last year’s National Games in Goa, MP had beaten Haryana 3-0 in the shootout after the two teams were locked in goalless regulation time.
On the other hand, Karnataka registered a hard-fought 3-2 win over Uttar Pradesh to win the gold medal. Faraz Khan converted a penalty corner in the first minute of the match for UP, while Karnataka’s Shamanth C found the back of the net in the eighth minute to level the scores 1-1. Then, Bharath Mahalingappa Kurtakoti and Abharan Sudev scored two more goals off the penalty corners in the 18th and the 39th minute to give a cushion to Karnataka.
Also, Maharashtra defeated Punjab 1-0 to win the bronze medal, with the help of a field goal from Venkatesh Kenche in the 36th minute.
