New Delhi:  After a disappointing spell at Al-Hilal, Neymar Jr scored his first goal for Santis since returning to Brazil when he converted a penalty in a 3-1 triumph over Sao Paulo-based Agua Santa on Sunday. This was Brazilian’s first strike in the fourth appearance since his return to his boyhood club in January after parting ways with the Saudi Pro club.

In the 11th minute, Neymar made a play with Yeferson Soteldo as he entered the area, gave a letter dribble and was knocked down by the opposing midfielder Villian Guilherme. The 33-year-old then calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of the net as goalkeeper Luan Ribeiro dove in the opposite direction.

After scoring the goal Neymar brought out his old touch as he did his trademark celebration soaking in the applause and adulation from the crowd as his teammates rushed over to celebrate with him.

The opening goal of the match was scored by Thaciano in the 26th minute and later on, Guilherme scored with an assist by Neymar in the 70th minute for Santos. The visiting team pulled one back through midfielder Netinho, who scored a spectacular long-range goal in the 43rd minute.

This goal marked Neymar’s 139th goal in 234 appearances for Santos. This was especially noteworthy because it was his first goal since October 3, 2023, when he celebrated after his previous team’s 3-0 victory over Nassaji in the AFC Champions League. Neymar joined Santos on a six-month contract which he said could be extended later.

How is Neymar performing at Santos FC?

So far, Neymar has not managed to play all 90 minutes for Santos and his performance was below par in the first three matches but he has shown some improvement in Sunday’s fixture as he continues to recover from a knee injury.

Although a return to his former club FC Barcelona seems difficult at the moment but many remain hopeful that the Brazilian can recover his top physical condition and represent Brazil in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
