‘Shubman Gill is generational talent’: Fans react to opener’s 101 vs BAN in CT opener

New Delhi: Young Indian opener Shubman Gill played a sublime knock of 101 not out to lead India’s way in the moderate-but demanding chase of 229 at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday. It was a calculative knock which had the components of precision and resoluteness in it.

The youngster started off well with Indian captain Rohit Sharma (41 off 36 balls) powering the team to a fiery start. Gill was fantastic at the task of grinding the Bangladesh bowler along with Virat Kohli (22 off 38 balls) in the middle overs when the strokes were getting difficult to make and the Bangladesh spinners got into its act.

Gill did see a min-collapse before his eyes with Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (15 off 17 balls), and Axar Patel (8 off 12 balls) walking back to the pavilion within a span of eight overs. He was ably supported by KL Rahul to avoid the tide from disrupting the ship. The duo applied exemplary defensive skills to avert any threat from further damage, keeping the Bangladesh spinners at bay with Tanzid and Rishad’s inexperience not helping to the Tigers’ cause.

Gill smashed nine boundaries and two sixes to complete his eighth century in the ODI format, his first in an ICC tournament.  He remained not out on 101 from 129 balls, though he didn’t get the opportunity to hit the winning runs courtesy of a KL Rahul six.

Shubman Gill breaks Virat Kohli record

Shubman Gill has now smashed successive tons in the ODI format after scoring 112 against England in the final ODI match in Ahmedabad. His eighth ODI century has come in the 51st innings, which makes him the quickest among the Indian batter to reach the feat, surpassing the likes of Shikhar Dhawan (57), Virat Kohli (68), Gautam Gambhir (98), and Sachin Tendulkar (111). He earned the Player of the Match for his outstanding contribution in the game.

Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 101 led India to victory against Bangladesh in an ICC tournament match. His century, his eighth in ODIs and first in an ICC event, was crucial after a mini-collapse by India’s middle order. Gill’s innings showcased his skill and composure, guiding India to a successful chase despite the pressure.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
