New Delhi: Following Brighton’s thrashing of Chelsea in the first game of matchday 25 last night, the race for the fourth spot blew open and provided room to the chasing pack. Manchester City took full advantage of this opportunity and completely blew away Newcastle United at home as they beat the Toons 4-0 to jump above the Blues and into the coveted fourth spot in the table.
Led by new signing Omar Marmoush, the Egyptian hit a quickfire hattrick in the first half to kill the game for the Magpies before academy graduate James McAtee sealed a the win with the fourth late on. Earlier in the day, Mikel Merino proved to be the hero for the Gunners as he came off the bench to inspire Arsenal to a late victory over Premier League strugglers Leicester City.
The Spaniard, who was brought on to play as a make shift striker, performed his role to perfection as he scored a late brace to help his side to a 2-0 win over the Foxes. This result saw Mikel Arteta’s side move within four points of leaders Liverpool, but they can restore the gap back to seven if they manage to beat Wolves tomorrow. Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest’s push for a return to the UEFA Champions League took a huge hit against Fulham.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side travelled to the Cottagers and suffered a shock defeat away from home, which left them on third but only three points separate them and fourth placed Manchester City now. The race for Europe is heating up as Bournemouth bounced back from their defeat to Liverpool with a commanding win over Southampton to leap above Newcastle and Chelsea in the league table on fifth.
Towards the bottom of the table, there wasn’t any movement outside the relegation zone as the bottom teams remained the same. Southampton remain seated at the bottom of the table but Leicester defeat and Ipswich Town’s draw away at Aston Villa means that the Tractor Boys move up to 18th on goal difference. Only two points separate Wolves from Leicester and Ipswich and a defeat to Liverpool tomorrow could see them get closer to the relegation zone.
