New Delhi: Three men from Gujarat were arrested for the placement of bets during the ICC Champions Trophy match between India and Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. Reports have suggested that police officials raided a bungalow in a Goa village on Thursday to catch the illegal activity.
A police spokesperson said that three men named Maksud Modan (28 years age), Aasifbhai Jiyaudeenbhai (25 years old) and Rizvan Bhash (20 years old), who are from Gujarat, were arrested in Pilerne village, which is barely 8 kilometres away from Goa capital city Panaji.
The police personnel found the men accepting bets for the India-Bangladesh ODI match played in the Champions Trophy. They were booked under the relevant sections of the Goa Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act. Four mobile phones, a laptop, a router (all appliances worth INR 1.1 lakh) were confiscated from the spot, as per the spokesperson, according to a report by news agency PTI.
India started their Champions Trophy campaign with a resounding victory over Bangladesh by six wickets in Dubai. The Rohit Sharma-led team were invited to bat first after Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto elected to bowl first.
Indian bowling unit led by senior man Mohammed Shami dismantled the top and middle order of Bangladesh, reducing them to 35 for 5 in nine overs. Bangladesh fought back with Towhid Hridoy (100) and Jaker Ali (68) posting a decisive 154-run partnership to post 228 on the board. Shami claimed figures of 5 for 53 – his sixth five-wicket haul – while completing 200 wickets in the ODI format.
Indian opener Shubman Gill scored successive hundreds (101*) to lead the team’s chase even though Bangladesh posted some challenges in the middle. Gill and Kl Rahul (41 off 47 balls) were unfazed and took the team home with 21 balls to spare.
India will next face arch-rivals Pakistan in one of the most high-octane fixtures of the game on Sunday at the same venue.
