New Delhi: Mirra Andreeva surged to a career-high ninth spot in the latest WTA rankings, becoming her the first 17-year-old in the top since 2007.
The Russian jumped up five slots after winning the Dubai Championships on Saturday to emulate Nicole Vaidisova who was the last 17-year-old in the top 10 in 2007.
Andreeva had dream run on way to the title in Dubai, defeating Grand Slam winners Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova, becoming the youngest player to win the trophy at a WTA 1000 tournament.
She reached the semi-finals of the French Open last year, which remains best performance at a Grand Slam tournament and is the seventh player in the last 30 years to be in the top 10 debut before her 18th birthday.
Martina Hingis (1996), Venus Williams (1998), Anna Kournikova (1998), Serena Williams (1999), Maria Sharapova (2004) and Vaidisova (2006) have achieved the milestone before her.
Andreeva is the first player to enter the top 10 since American Emma Navarro, now ranked No. 10, last September and is the 154th player in the top in the women’s rankings history.
Keys up at No. 5
Madison Keys also reached a career-best No. 5 after her win at the Australian Open, despite not competing in any match since that triumph in Melbourne last month.
Beaten by Keys in the final at Melbourne Park, Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka remains the top-ranked women player, ahead of Pole Iga Swiatek, followed by Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula.
Italian Jasmie Paolini is at sixth, a spot ahead of Kazakh Elena Rybakina. China’s Qinwen Zheng is eighth, ahead of Andreeva and Navarro.
Among other notable movements, Czech Karolina Muchova has moved to No. 15 on the back of a semi-final appearance in Dubai, having made it to the semi-finals of her last nine events since July of last year.
The ATP’s top 10 rankings for men remains largely unchanged, with the only movement being Andrey Rublev’s rise by a slot to No. 9 after winning the Qatar Open, to push Tommy Paul a spot behind him.
Jannik Sinner, who is currently suspended for three months for doping, remained No. 1, ahead of Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz and Casper Ruud.
