Premier League: Liverpool go 13 points clear as Arsenal stumble, City climb to fourth

New Delhi: The midweek Premier League games witnessed some spectacular matches with scorelines that let Liverpool believe they can clinch the trophy this season. Liverpool tightened their grip at the top with a commanding 2-0 win over Newcastle while second-placed Arsenal’s frustration grew as they were held to a goalless draw by Nottingham Forest, missing a chance to keep pace with the Reds.

Elsewhere, the reigning champions Manchester City got back in the top-four and Manchester United their home drought run in the league with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Ipswich. With just 10 games left, every point is crucial, and this round of fixtures may prove decisive in the final standings.

Brighton 1-1 Everton

Everton stretched their unbeaten run to seven Premier League games as Jake O’Brien’s first top-flight goal earned them a 1-1 draw against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. The hosts looked set for all three points after Yoane Wissa got them the lead in first-half stoppage time punishing Everton for a string of missed chances, particularly from Beto. The striker was twice denied in the first half and later denied another golden opportunity, failing to beat Mark Flekken from close range.

However, the Toffees found a way back late on when Vitalii Mykolenko marked his 100th Premier League appearance by delivering a pinpoint cross for O’Brien, who powered home a diving header in the 77th minute. The result saw Everton drop to 15th while Brentford remain 11th but are now winless in six home league matches.

Manchester United 3-2 Ipswich Town

Manchester United finally ended their wait for a home Premier League win as they eased past Ipswich Town 3-2 in a dramatic encounter at Old Trafford. The visitors stunned United just four minutes into the game when Jaden Philogene capitalised on a defensive mix-up, tapping into an empty net after Patrick Dorgu’s wayward pass left Andre Onana stranded. But United responded with two quickfire goals, first through Sam Morsy’s own goal before Matthijs de Ligt smashed in a rebound to turn the game around. The momentum swung again just before halftime as Ipswich went down to ten men following Dorgu’s red card for a reckless challenge on Omari Hutchinson. However, Philogene’s second was a looping cross that evaded Onana and brought the visitors level once more time.

With the game in the balance, Harry Maguire delivered the decisive moment and powered home a header from a corner to secure all three points for Ruben Amorim’s side. The result lifted United to 14th while Ipswich’s winless run in 2025 continued leaving them third-bottom and five points from relegation.

Nottingham Forest 0-0 Arsenal

Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions suffered another setback as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. In a game lacking clear-cut chances, the Gunners struggled to break down a disciplined Forest side with Riccardo Calafiori coming closest in the first half when his effort struck the post. Mikel Arteta’s men lacked creativity in the final third and failed to register a shot on target before the break. Their best opportunity came early in the second half when Mikel Merino’s header from Declan Rice’s corner forced Matz Sels into action but that was as close as they got to breaking the deadlock.

Despite dominating possession Arsenal failed to convert their pressure into meaningful opportunities with Kieran Tierney heading wide and Thomas Partey scuffing a late effort. The result leaves them second on 57 points and their title hopes fading with every dropped point. Meanwhile, Forest remains third and are just six points behind Arsenal as they continue their push for a top-four finish.

Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Manchester City

Erling Haaland helped Manchester City register a crucial 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur as they got back in the top four. Pep Guardiola’s side desperate to bounce back after their defeat to Liverpool started strongly and took the lead in the 12th minute when Haaland expertly turned in Jeremy Doku’s cross. City could have extended their advantage before the break but Savinho squandered a glorious opportunity and Guglielmo Vicario denied Haaland from close range. Spurs were passive in the first half and tried to get back into the game after halftime with Mathys Tel and Brennan Johnson missing half-chances before Son Heung-min was denied by Ederson at the near post.

City thought they had wrapped up the points in stoppage time when Haaland found the net again only for VAR to rule it out for handball. The drama continued until the very end with Pape Sarr missing a golden opportunity to equalise deep into stoppage time. Despite late pressure from Spurs, City held firm to secure a much-needed win. Haaland’s winner marked his 20th league goal of the season making him just the second player after Ruud van Nistelrooy to reach that milestone in each of his first three Premier League campaigns.

Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle United

Liverpool tightened their grip on the Premier League title race with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield. Dominik Szoboszlai set the tone early as he found the net in the 11th minute to continue his impressive scoring form. The visitors were without their key forward Alexander Isak but still tried to respond and struggled to break down a well-organized Liverpool side. Mohamed Salah, despite not scoring played a key role in securing the win as he assisted Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half strike to put the result beyond doubt. With Arne Slot and Sipke Hulshoff serving touchline bans, Johnny Heitinga oversaw the Reds’ latest step towards the title in a lively Anfield atmosphere.

Newcastle found it tough to create meaningful chances and finally failed to register a single shot on target as Liverpool’s defence stood firm. This marked the Reds’ 12th clean sheet of the season, reinforcing their solidity at the back. The win extended Liverpool’s lead to 13 points with just 10 matches left and for Eddie Howe’s side, the defeat dealt a blow to their Champions League qualification hopes, leaving them three points adrift of the top four.

Liverpool extended their lead as Arsenal dropped points again, Man City climbed to fourth while Man United ended their home drought in a thrilling midweek.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
