New Delhi: Real Madrid star Luka Modric is still not ready to say goodbye. At 39, most footballers would be preparing their farewell speech—but not the Croatian. While questions continue to swirl around his future, Modric has made it clear that he is not thinking about retirement. He wants to keep playing. And more than anything, he hopes to do that at Real Madrid.

Modric’s role has changed, no doubt about it. Young stars like Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga have taken over the starting spots. But Modric still brings calm, control, and class every time he steps onto the pitch. This season, he has made 44 appearances across all competitions. Even though he started just 11 La Liga games, he remains a trusted figure for manager Carlo Ancelotti. He’s worn the captain’s armband. He’s played key roles in tight games. And he continues to guide the next generation of Real Madrid players.

In a recent interview with Telefoot, Luka Modric was honest about where he stands. “Right now, I’m not thinking about retirement,” he said. “I’d love to retire at Real Madrid—that would be a dream. We’ll see what happens.” It’s a message filled with hope, but also acceptance. Modric knows his minutes are fewer now. He’s not the first name on the team sheet anymore. But he’s okay with that. “I’m delighted to contribute in whatever capacity,” he added.

That mindset is exactly why he remains so valuable. Real Madrid are going through a midfield rebuild. With Bellingham’s goals, Valverde’s endless running, and Tchouameni’s strength, the future looks bright. But none of them have Modric’s experience. None of them have his calmness in the final moments. Just look at April’s Clásico—Modric came on and delivered a stunning assist that changed the game. His vision, passing accuracy, and big-game temperament still stand out.

Modric’s contract ends this summer. He’s been getting one-year deals from the club for the past few seasons. It’s a system that works—Real Madrid stay flexible, and Modric gets to prove himself year after year. Financially, there’s no issue. He earns around €10 million a year, which is much lower than Bellingham’s €20 million. Keeping Modric would not hurt the wage bill, even as the club looks to sign Kylian Mbappé.

Offers have come from elsewhere. Clubs in Saudi Arabia and the MLS are interested. But Modric isn’t tempted. His heart is still in Madrid. His dream is to retire at the Bernabéu, and fans would love to see that too. They still chant his name. They still know how important he is—even if he’s no longer playing every week.

As the season nears its end, Real Madrid are fighting for both La Liga and the Champions League. Modric may not start every game, but he could still be the difference in the biggest moments. He’s done it before. And knowing Luka Modric, he just might do it again.

Real Madrid star Luka Modric says he’s not ready to retire yet and hopes to sign a new deal, even as his role becomes smaller in Ancelotti’s youthful midfield.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
