New Delhi: Punjab Kings said he was glad to have backed his instincts even after getting dismissed cheaply in Punjab Kings’ two earlier matches in IPL 2025. The young opener fancied his inhibition free batting style and it paid handsome dividends as he smashed seven boundaries and nine sixes on way to his maiden ton in the glamour tournament.
Arya’s 103-run knock off 42 balls set up Punjab Kings’ 18-run win over five-time champions Chennai Super Kings at Mullanpur. It was Punjab’s only second win at this venue in seven matches.
Delhi-boy Arya came into the limelight for his six-hitting prowess in the Delhi Premier League and he displayed it on the national stage as his destructive hitting took PBKS to 219/6, after which CSK could only make 201/5.
Arya reached triple figures in 39 balls, the fifth quickest in the history of IPL. Former West Indies opener Chris Gayle hold the record for the fastest ton (30 balls in 2013).
Asked to explain his though process and approach to batting Arya said: “I’m not expressive but getting a very good feeling from within. In the last game, Shreyas Iyer talked about backing your instincts, he suggested me to play the way I want to.
“I was thinking that if I get the first ball in my slot, I will definitely hit it for a six. I want to express myself as much as I can and not restrict myself.”
The 24-year-old came into reckoning last year when he hit six sixes in an over in a local league match. He was under pressure to perform after being dismissed cheaply in Punjab’s last two games.
But he showe little anxiety or stage fright as blasted all the six CSK bowlers to all parts of the ground even after his team slumped to 83/5 inside eight overs.
Arya scored the quickest century against CSK and was dismissed in the 14th over with the score on 154/6.
