New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were dealt with a big blow on Thursday as regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 due to an injury. This brings back CSK veteran Mahendra Singh Dhoni back in the leadership roles for the remainder of the 18th season. This comes ahead of the side’s major clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Chennai on April 11, Friday.
Former New Zealand player and CSK head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the development during an interaction with mediapersons. ‘Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out of IPL with fracture on elbow. MS Dhoni to take over as captain,’ Fleming told on April 10. Gaikwad sustained the blow when he was hit by a short ball from Jofra Archer during CSK’s match against RR.

28-year-old Gaikwad sustained a blow to his elbow while facing Tushar Deshpande in CSK’s March 30 clash against Rajasthan Royals. He featured in the next two matches, against Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) but scans confirmed a fracture which don’t allow him to participate further in the league. Out of the total five matches played thus far, CSK has faced defeats in four of them and won just a lone tie.
The injury is a major setback for the five-time winners, who have lost four of their first five matches and sit ninth in the standings. Notably, Gaikwad has been CSK’s leading run-scorer in three of the last four seasons and with him being out, this comes as a big blow to their already misfiring batting line-up. In total, Dhoni has captained CSK in 235 of their 268 matches till now and under his leadership, the franchise has clinched titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.
