New Delhi: Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu has been elected as the chairperson of Indian Weightlifting Federation’s Athletes Commission.
Chanu finished second in the 49kg category at Tokyo 2020 said she was honoured and would use the opportunity to raise pertinent issues on behalf of fellow weightlifters.
“I express my immense gratitude to the Indian Weightlifting Federation for electing me as the Chairperson of the Athletes Commission of the federation. The opportunity to represent and uphold the voice of fellow weightlifters is a matter of great pride for me,” she said in a press statement.
“I pledge to take the responsibilities that come with the role seriously. I will work towards spreading the athletes’ voice and viewpoints across all key channels to ensure we can continue to focus on the sport without being distracted by external factors,” she added.
Chanu is the second Indian weightlifter to claim an Olympics medal. The Manipuri lifted a total of 210 k to claim silver at the Tokyp Games but failed to be on the podium at Paris 2024.
The 31-year-old weightlifter later clamed weakness from her menstrual cycle during the competition to missing out on a medal at Paris 2024.
Chanu is a two-time gold medal winner at Commonwealth Games (2018 and 2022) and is also a former world champion in 2017 and a silver medallist in 2022.
The 31-year-old has won three gold medals and a silver at Commonwealth Championships and finished fourth at the 2023 Asian Games after suffering a hip injury.
Chaunu finished second in the 49kg category at Tokyo 2020 said she was honoured and would use the opportunity to raise pertinent issues on behalf of fellow weightlifters. Other Sports Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
