New Delhi: Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has rejoined the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, days after getting sacked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Nayar was removed as the assistant coach of the Indian cricket team as part of a reshuffle of the backroom staff following their woeful run in Tests.
KKR shared Nayar’s picture on social media to confirm his reappointment, but did not reveal the details of his new role in the franchise. Nayar was serving as an assistant coach at KKR but he left the role to join the Indian team as part of new head coach Gautam Gambhir’s support staff. Nayar was part of KKR’s coaching staff during their IPL 2024-winning campaign under Gambhir and was rewarded for his hard work.
Nayar is a renowned coach in the Indian circuit and has worked with several prominent names, including the likes of Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, Shreyas Iyer and Rinku Singh among others. He has helped several cricketers rediscover their form and raise their game with mental and skill coaching. However, Nayar’s stint with the Indian team turned out to be a brief one.

He faced the axe as part of a reshuffle by the BCCI following India’s poor run in Test cricket. India suffered a humiliating 0-3 whitewash in the Test series against New Zealand at home last year before losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia 3-1. Abhishek was sacked alongside India’s fielding coach T Dilip and strength and conditioning coach Sohum Desai.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have roped in Abhishek Nayar, days after he was sacked as the assistant coach of the Indian cricket team. KKR confirmed Nayar’s return on Saturday. IPL Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
