Akshaya Tritiya 2025: Rituals, significance, and powerful mantras

Mumbai: In Hinduism, Akshaya Tritiya holds immense significance, and it is equally revered in Jainism. The term ‘Akshaya’ means ‘never diminishing’, and ‘Tritiya’ refers to the ‘third day’. This festival is celebrated on the third lunar day (Tritiya Tithi) of the bright half of the month of Vaishakha. In 2025, Akshaya Tritiya falls on Wednesday, 30 April. The day is considered extremely auspicious and fruitful. According to belief, Akshaya Tritiya marks the beginning of both the Satya Yuga and the Treta Yuga, and hence it is also referred to as Yugaadi Tithi. Additionally, this day is regarded as the birth anniversary of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

It is said that on this day, sage Ved Vyasa commenced the composition of the Mahabharata, which Lord Ganesha transcribed. The Mahabharata mentions that Lord Krishna gifted Draupadi the Akshaya Patra (an inexhaustible vessel) on this day, which never ran out of food. Another belief states that on Akshaya Tritiya, Lord Kuber was blessed by Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma and was appointed the treasurer of heaven.

According to the Panchang (Hindu calendar), the Tritiya Tithi of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha month will commence at 5:32 PM on 29 April and will end at 2:15 PM on 30 April. Hence, according to Udaya Tithi (daybreak reference), Akshaya Tritiya will be celebrated on 30 April, Wednesday.

Akshaya Tritiya Puja Vidhi (Ritual Method)

On Akshaya Tritiya, wake up before sunrise and bathe. If possible, bathing in a holy river is considered especially auspicious.

After bathing, wear clean clothes, preferably in yellow, as the colour yellow is beloved to both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.

Purify the home temple or puja area using Ganga Jal (holy water).

Place a red or yellow cloth on a raised platform and install idols or pictures of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu.

Take water, unbroken rice (Akshat), and flowers in your hand, and vow to observe the fast. Apply tilak of roli, sandalwood, turmeric, and kumkum on the idols.

Offer yellow flowers to Lord Vishnu and lotus or pink flowers to Goddess Lakshmi. Light incense sticks and a ghee lamp at the puja spot.

For the offerings (Naivedya), present barley or wheat flour (sattu), fruits (especially mangoes and cucumbers), sweets, and soaked chickpeas to the deities. Offering kheer (rice pudding) or white sweets to Goddess Lakshmi is also considered auspicious.

Reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama (thousand names of Vishnu) is highly beneficial. Also, read or listen to the Akshaya Tritiya vrat katha (fasting story) and sing the aarti (devotional songs) of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.

After the puja, offer tulsi water to Lord Vishnu.

Donate food, clothes, water, fruits, gold, or silver to the poor, Brahmins, or those in need, as per your capacity. It is believed that donations made on this day yield eternal rewards.

Mantras to Chant

“Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Maha Lakshmyai Namah”

“Om Maha Lakshmyai Namo Namah”

For Lord Vishnu: “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”

Performing the Akshaya Tritiya puja with devotion in this manner is believed to please Goddess Lakshmi, who then showers her devotees with wealth, prosperity, and happiness in their homes.

Significance of Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya is considered an ‘Abujh Muhurat’, meaning any auspicious activity such as marriage, housewarming, or the start of a new business can be undertaken without the need for a specific muhurat (auspicious time). Acts of charity are considered especially meritorious on this day. People donate food, clothes, water, fruits, and gold according to their capacity. Buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya is considered extremely auspicious and is seen as a sign of future prosperity.

The day is also ideal for beginning new ventures, business activities, or spiritual practices. Furthermore, performing rituals like Tarpan (offerings for ancestors) and Shraddha (ancestral rites) on this day is regarded as highly important.
