New Delhi: 14-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi etched his name into the IPL record books on Monday, becoming the youngest player to score a century in the tournament’s history. The left-handed prodigy smashed a breathtaking 101 off just 38 deliveries against the Gujarat Titans, an innings laced with seven fours and 11 towering sixes that helped Rajasthan Royals secure a dominant eight-wicket win in Jaipur. He even surpassed Yusuf Pathan’s record of the fastest IPL hundred by an Indian player.

Displaying remarkable composure and clarity for someone so young, Suryavanshi’s powerful knock has sparked conversations about his potential to earn a call-up to the Indian national team and perhaps even eclipse the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record.

Tendulkar made his debut for India in 1989 at just 16 years and 205 days, setting a record for the youngest Indian to play international cricket. If Suryavanshi continues to impress throughout the remainder of the IPL season, there’s every chance he could break that milestone and make his international debut even earlier.

The signs are promising as Suryavanshi has already represented India at the U-19 level and made his first-class debut in January 2024. His rapid development and fearless style of play have turned heads across the cricketing world.

Coach predicts national call-up in 1–2 years

Suryavanshi’s childhood coach, Manish Ojha, believes his young ward is destined for international cricket and sooner rather than later. Ojha told PTI, “As a coach, it is a proud moment for me. For a state like Bihar, which is not strong in sports, this is like a ray of sunlight. He has put Bihar on the cricketing map.”

Ojha added, “If he continues to play like this, I feel he will definitely break into India’s T20 squad in the next one or two years.”

According to Ojha, Suryavanshi is not just naturally gifted but also possesses a sharp cricketing mind. “He has a learning attitude. Whatever is suggested to him, he grasps it immediately. He’s always been aggressive and clear in his thought process,” he said.

Recalling a conversation before the match, Ojha shared with a smile, “He called me and said, ‘Sir, aaj maarunga…(I will hit today)’ and he did exactly that.

Looking ahead

While it may be premature to draw direct comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s record-breaking feat at such a tender age is a rare and remarkable achievement. His confidence, maturity, and natural flair with the bat signal the arrival of a potential future star.

Whether he eventually rewrites the records of the Master Blaster remains to be seen, but one thing is certain that Indian cricket has unearthed a new gem.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi scores 101 off 38 balls at 14, becoming the youngest IPL centurion and sparking comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar’s legacy.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
