New Delhi: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, on Wednesday, bid adieu to his Test career announcing his retirement with immediate effect. The step comes just ahead of the Test series against England in June, where India are supposed to play five Test matches against the Three Lions. The Indian skipper took to social media handle to confirm his decision, also saying that he will continue to lead the team in the ODI format.

Just before Rohit announced his decision to retire from the longest format, reports of the ‘Hitman’ being sacked from the whites started doing the rounds on social media. Rohit, who was struggling to deliver as a captain and player in the red-ball format, faced a lot of criticism for his captaincy and performance after Team India’s series whitewash against New Zealand in a Test series last year followed by the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 1-3 loss against Australia.

Rohit’s retirement from Tests was followed by a plethora of tributes not only from the cricketing fraternity but scores of fans as well. Many of the IPL franchises, the ICC and the BCCI thanked the Indian skipper for his services in the format, saying that they are proud of him.

Apart from the Indian cricket board, global governing body the International Cricket Council (ICC) also paid tribute to the veteran player on their social media handle.

Rohit, who is currently playing in the Indian Premier League 2025, also got tributes from his franchise Mumbai Indians and other teams such as the Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings.

Additionally, people from the cricketing community, fans, Indian players paid tributes to the veteran cricketer extending good wishes to him.

The 38-year-old batter from Mumbai represented India in 67 Test matches scoring a total of 4301 runs. He also slammed 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries with a batting average of little above 40. having already retired from the T20I format after India’s 2024 World Cup triumph, Rohit will only be seen in action in the 50-over format and the IPL.
