New Delhi: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, on Wednesday, bid adieu to his Test career announcing his retirement with immediate effect. The step comes just ahead of the Test series against England in June, where India are supposed to play five Test matches against the Three Lions. The Indian skipper took to social media handle to confirm his decision, also saying that he will continue to lead the team in the ODI format.
Just before Rohit announced his decision to retire from the longest format, reports of the ‘Hitman’ being sacked from the whites started doing the rounds on social media. Rohit, who was struggling to deliver as a captain and player in the red-ball format, faced a lot of criticism for his captaincy and performance after Team India’s series whitewash against New Zealand in a Test series last year followed by the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 1-3 loss against Australia.
Rohit’s retirement from Tests was followed by a plethora of tributes not only from the cricketing fraternity but scores of fans as well. Many of the IPL franchises, the ICC and the BCCI thanked the Indian skipper for his services in the format, saying that they are proud of him.

Well played #RohitSharma. As player and as captain, you were a joy and India will say a big thank you to you. That century in Chennai, that one at the Oval, both priceless. You walked out against South Africa to open as if you had done it all your life. Will look forward to…
