Leading figures return as Australia announce squad for WTC Final 2025

New Delhi: Key figures in form of Cameron Green, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were named in Australia’s squad for the WTC Final 2025 next month against South Africa. Green’s return to the team for the crucial clash in whites against the Proteas at Lord’s comes as a major boost for the side as the player joins after a back surgery which kept him out for a while.

Other stalwarts like Cummins and Hazlewood have also overcome injuries that kept them out of the tour to Sri Lanka and the ICC Champions Trophy earlier in the year. Both will return to action via the Indian Premier League (IPL), which has temporarily been suspended and is set to resume on May 17. The squad also sees the inclusion of flamboyant opener Sam Konstas.

In addition, spinner Matt Kuhnemann has also been included while Sheffield Shield player of the final, Brendan Doggett, has been named a travelling reserve for the 15-player squad, which will then head to the West Indies for a three-Test series in Barbados, Grenada and Jamaica from June 25.

Apart from these, there aren’t many surprises in the squad, which is more or less the same that competed against India and later Sri Lanka earlier this year. Pat Cummins’ side is seeking to become the first nation to win multiple WTC finals when it faces South Africa at Lord’s from June 11. The Kangaroos won four of its six series to clinch a spot in its second straight WTC final. They also drew 2-2 with England in the 2023 Ashes and 1-1 with West Indies during the 2023-24 home summer.
