New Delhi: Current champions Liverpool dominate the eight-player shortlist for the Premier League player of the season award. The Reds trio of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Ryan Gravenberch, who helped the Merseysiders to a record-equalling 20th title, are among the eight players nominated for the coveted prize.
Skipper Van Dijk has led from the front, featuring in every Premier League game for Liverpool this season and helping the club register 14 clean sheets. His Dutch compatriot Gravenberch, a rock-solid influence in the midfield, has only missed one match.
Egyptian magician Salah, meanwhile, amassed a league-high 46 goal contributions, including 28 goals.
Nottingham Forest duo in eight-man shortlist
Nottingham Forest is the only other club with multiple nominees, with attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and forward Chris Wood making it to the elite list of nominees. Wood has been instrumental in Forest’s remarkable European football-chasing run, scoring 20 goals in 34 matches.
Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, the second-highest goal scorer in the league with 23 goals, is also shortlisted for the award. Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, who has scored 18 goals and provided seven assists and has the third-most goal contributions in the league, is also nominated.
Arsenal midfielder maestro Declan Rice completes the list of nominees.
The winner will be announced next week after counting a combination of public votes and votes from a panel of football experts.
The last five winners, including Kevin de Bruyne, who has won it twice, have all come from Manchester City, but no Cityzens player makes the list of nominees in an underwhelming season for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s rising star Cole Palmer is one of the eight names on the shortlist for the 2024/25 Premier League Young Player of the Season. The other names are: Liam Delap (Ipswich Town), Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest), Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool), Dean Huijsen (Bournemouth), Joao Pedro (Brighton & Hove Albion), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa), and William Saliba (Arsenal)
