Ishant Sharma reveals his first choice for India’s Test captaincy

New Delhi: The captaincy debate for the Indian cricket Test team has intensified since the retirement of Rohit Sharma, who called it quits from the longest format. While the BCCI management is yet to decide on who’s going to be the next Test captain for India, people, especially in the Indian cricketing fraternity are picking and revealing their choices for the position.

Former Indian pacer Ishant Sharma has revealed his first choice player who can take over the mantle from the senior batter. In response to a query put up by news agency PTI on Star Sports Press Room, the veteran Indian pacer backed pace spreadhead Jasprit Bumrah to lead the Indian team on the tour to England next month.

Ishant considers Bumrah best for the position

While former India head coach Ravi Shastri was against appointing Bumrah as the captain quoting over-burden as the reason, Ishant said that he is the best man for the job. The veteran seamer further said that Shubman Gill could be handed the job only if the fast bowler is not fit to last the full five-match Test series. It is to be noted that Gill’s name has come up as the top contender for the role.

‘If Bumrah is fit, I would say Bumrah. That’s first choice. He is the only one who has so much experience. But if he won’t play all the five Tests matches, then obviously Shubman,’ Ishant said on Saturday.

The ace pacer has captained Indian previously in the rescheduled fifth Test against England in 2022 and in the first and fifth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. However, what must be stopping the Indian team management for choosing Bumrah as the skipper are the concerns over his fitness and him being injury prone.
