Jamie Vardy’s having a party: Veteran striker scores first goal of the Nisterooy era

New Delhi: Leicester City were off to a flyer as somewhat poetically veteran striker got them off to an amazing start by scoring the first goal of the Ruud Van Nistelrooy era at the King Power Stadium. The 37-year-old cleverly managed to keep himself onside as he latched on to a smart pass from Bilal El Khannouss before heading into the box unchallenged and produced a neat finish past Łukasz Fabiański in the West Ham goal.

Vardy had put his side ahead just one minute and 38 seconds into Nistelrooy’s managerial debut for the Foxes, marking a poetic start to the legendary striker’s career. Jamie Vardy, a Leicester City and a Premier League legend on his own accord has a long standing connection with the Dutch striker that predates to a time when Nistelrooy was still learning the managerial ropes in PSV’s youth academy.

The Englishman, who was a huge part of what is regarded as the greatest underdog story in the history of the beautiful game, broke a long standing Ruud Van Nistelrooy record on his way to guiding Leicester to the title. The former Manchester United striker had a record of scoring in 10 consecutive matches in the Premier League before Vardy came along and broke that long standing record by scoring in 11 consecutive games during the iconic 2015/16 season.

Both, the Hammers and the Foxes, headed into this game on a bad run of form. Both teams were coming off drubbings from the previous league games, with Leicester losing 4-1 to Brentford and West Ham losing 5-2 to Arsenal at home, but it was the Foxes that seem to have piled on more misery on the visitors. West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui is already under huge pressure having failed to hit the ground running.

West Ham invested heavily in their squad in the summer, spending over £100 million on nine new recruits but have only won four games all season which has seen them stuck in the 14th position. Facing off against a Leicester City side that have a young manager at the helm, this was a game that West Ham would’ve expected to win but instead, they found themselves a goal down within two minutes, which has just increased the pressure on the Hammers boss.

There are rumblings going around the internet that Lopetegui is on thin ice at the London stadium after such a poor start to the campaign. Many names are being linked with the West Ham job should the Spaniard face the sack, and a defeat at the King Power stadium just might be the final straw. The latest name to be linked with the West Ham hotseat, according to The Guardian, is that of former Porto manager Sérgio Conceição, who reportedly has a lot support from within the club.
