New Delhi: Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians have signed Jonny Bairstow, Richard Gleeson, and Charith Asalanka as replacements for the overseas trio of Will Jacks, Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch. All three foreign recruits will leave for national duty following the team’s final league match.
English batter Jacks and the South African duo of Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch will leave India after MI’s last league match against Punjab Kings on May 26.
“Jacks will be replaced by English wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow, who joins the squad at a price of Rs 5.25 crore,” the IPL stated in an official release.
“English pacer Richard Gleeson will come in for Ryan Rickelton at a reserve price of Rs one crore, while Sri Lankan batter Charith Asalanka replaces Corbin Bosch at Rs 75 lakh.”
MI-DC face in must-win clash
Mumbai Indians, placed fourth with seven wins in 12 matches, face Delhi Capitals in a must-win clash on Wednesday. With the race for the last play-off heating up with every passing game, the high-stakes clash will more or less decide the last team to qualify for the playoffs.
Capitals are also in with a chance for a last-four spot. The Axar Patel-led team is sitting in the fifth spot with six wins in 12 matches. Any result except a win would end their slim playoff chances.
The three replacement signings will only be available from the playoffs stage, provided MI qualify for the knockout rounds.
Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) became the latest team to be knocked out of the playoffs race.
LSG lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets and are out of the play-offs race with two more matches left.
While there were several reasons behind LSG’s dismal campaign, the biggest was skipper Rishabh Pant’s form. The record 27-crore signing failed to live up to his price tag, scoring 134 runs in 12 games and at a strike-rate of below 100. This is Pant’s worst IPL season since he made his debut for Delhi Capitals in 2016.
