New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday announced the Under-19 squad for the upcoming tour of England. Rising stars Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, who have attracted attention in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), are part of the talented squad that will be on a one-month tour of England starting from June 24.
The Junior Cricket Committee picked the squad for the tour, which comprises a 50-over warm-up match, followed by a five-match Youth One-Day series and two Multi-Day matches against the England U-19 team.
Mhatre, who has played some blazing innings at the top of the order for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), will lead the squad. Abhigyan Kundu, the wicket-keeper batter in the team, will be Mhatre’s deputy.
Mhatre, Sooryavanshi ready to impress in India colours
In all probability, Mhtare will open the innings with Sooryavanshi, who has set the IPL ablaze with some amazing knocks. The 14-year-old Bihar boy has been one of the few bright sparks in the Rajasthan Royals’ disastrous campaign.
The 2008 champions were among the first few teams to be knocked out of the playoff race. With just four wins in 14 matches, the Jaipur-based franchise finished the campaign in ninth spot and could end at the bottom if CSK manages a handsome win in their last fixture.
Last month, Sooryavanshi smashed the record books by converting his maiden T20 fifty into a magnificent century in a league match against the Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Mansingh Singh Stadium in Jaipur.
Aged 14 years 32 days, Sooryavanshi shattered the record for the youngest century in all men’s T20 cricket history.
Sooryavanshi raised his fifty in 17 balls after smashing Ishant Sharma for 26 runs in an over, and 18 balls later reached the three-figure mark. The 35-ball century puts Sooryavanshi second behind Chris Gayle in the list for fastest IPL hundreds.
The announcement of the U-19 schedule means that India’s junior and senior squads will be in England in almost the same time frame. The men’s senior team will tour England for a five-Test series starting on June 19.
