New Delhi: Mitchell Marsh’s maiden Indian Premier League ton pulled Lucknow Super Giants to a 33-run win over table topper Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
The Australian’s 117 off 64 balls, laced with 10 boundaries and eight sixes, was the cornerstone of LSG’s huge score of 235 for 2, which GT found too steep to chase down.
GT stopped at 202 for nine but remained on top of the standings with 18 points from 13 matches while LSG improved to 12 points from as any matches though are were already eliminated from the race to the play-offs.
Marsh became the first overseas batter to score a hundred in this edition of the tournament as he shared a 91-run opening wicket with Aiden Markram (36) and then 121 runs for the second wicket with Nicholas Pooran (56 not out off 27 deliveries).
GT remained in the hunt through Shahrukh Khan (57 off 29), Sherfane Rutherford (38), skipper Shubman Gill (35) and Jos Buttler (33) but ran out of steam in the end as William O’Rourke (3/27) made crucial breakthroughs.
Marsh hits maiden IPL ton
Earlier, Marsh’s maiden ton in the tournament propelled LSG to a huge score of 235 for two. Marsh’s century was the first by an overseas batter in the tournament, which he completed in the 17th over with a single off Arshad Khan towards deep point.
Marsh took 56 balls to reach his ton, hitting 10 boundaries and six sixes, and was dismissed after scoring 117 off 64 deliveries. The 33-year-ols blasted 10 fours and eight maximums on way to joining his brother in scoring a century in the tournament.
Marsh put on 91 runs for the opening wicket with Aiden Markram (36 off 24 balls) and 121 runs for the second wicket with Nicholas Pooran (56 not out off 27 balls) in only 51 deliveries.
LSG skipper Rishabh Pant, who has struggled with the bat throughout the tournament, was unbeaten on 16 off six balls.
Australia Marsh has been in rich vein of form this season, massing 559 runs in 12 innings so far, at an average of 50.81 and a strike rate of 162.97.
LSG batters clubbed 17 sixes in their innings, the highest by them in an IPL match that points out the dominance they enjoyed over Gujarat bowlers.
