New Delhi: India’s squad for the upcoming Test series against England is set to be announced on Saturday, May 24. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar will be meeting with the other members of the national selection panel at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai to announce the squad on Saturday. The crucial tour of England will be India’s first major assignment without senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who announced their Test retirements earlier this month.
The Indian squad is likely to consist of some new faces along with a host of youngsters as the team prepares for a transition after the departure of Kohli, Rohit and R Ashwin, who quit Test cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 last year. Shubman Gill is reportedly set to be unveiled as the new Test captain, while the likes of Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair are likely to make the cut in the squad.
There has been a lot of debate around Shreyas Iyer’s return to the Test squad after the Mumbai batter’s terrific run in the domestic circuit. Iyer has sparked an incredible turnaround ever since being snubbed in the BCCI central contract list last year and has performed consistently with the bat, while also proving his mettle as a leader.
Iyer did well for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 with 480 runs in five matches at an excellent average of 68.57, including two centuries. He was the 4th highest run-getter in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 with 345 runs in 8 innings and helped Mumbai lift the title.
He was India’s highest run-getter in the Champions Trophy 2025 and played a key role in helping the Men in Blue win the title. Iyer has continued his purple patch for Punjab Kings in the ongoing IPL 2025 with 435 runs in 12 matches.
Selectors not convinced of Shreyas Iyer’s red-ball skills
Despite his prolific run across formats over the last 15 months, Iyer is unlikely to make the cut in India’s squad for the England Test series. As per a report in the Times of India, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel is not convinced of Iyer’s red-ball skills despite his newfound approach in white-ball cricket, where he has found immense success with a new stance and a swashbuckling approach.
“Iyer’s new stance, bold strokeplay, carefree attitude to batting are all suited to the white-ball game now. The selectors aren’t convinced about his red-ball skills,” a source tracking development, was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
The report adds that both Sudharsan and Nair are certain to be picked in the squad after their impressive run in the domestic circuit. Gill will be leading the team in England with either Rishabh Pant or KL Rahul serving as his deputy. The squad will mark the start of a new era for India in Test cricket.
Shreyas Iyer is reportedly unlike to make the cut in India’s Test squad for the upcoming series against England. The selectors are not convinced of the batter’s red-ball game. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
