Hours before closing ceremony, evacuation at Paris Olympics as man tries to climb Eiffel Tower

New Delhi: A man attempted to climb the Eiffel Tower hours before the beginning of Paris Olympics closing ceremony, prompting an evacuation of the site on Sunday.

French police brought down the man down, who while shirtless tried to scale the the 330-metre tall tower in the afternoon. As soon as he was spotted above the Olympic rings that adorns the second section of the monument, police began to escort visitors away from the area.

Those vistors who are temporarily locked on the second floor exited after 30 minutes. It remains unlear where the shirtless gut began to climb the tower.

Paris most famous landmark was the centre of attraction at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony when singer Celine Dion performed from one of its viewing areas.

Though the tower isn’t part of the closing ceremony programme, yet police began an evacuation process for safety reasons. The closing ceremony will kick-off at Stade de France.

Over 30,000 police officers are on duty in Paris on Sunday for the closing ceremony, with an aim of concluding th Games without any major security incident.

France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has said apart from 3,000 police officers who will be on patrol around the Stade de France, around 20,000 more along with other security personnel will be mobilised to enure saftey and security on the concluding day of the Olympics.
