New Delhi: French striker Kylian Mbappe won his maiden European Golden Shoe after a stellar season with Real Madrid. Despite the club finishing the 2024-25 season trophyless, Mbappe enjoyed a prolific campaign for the Los Blancos as he scored an impressive 31 goals in La Liga to finish as the top scorer in the Spanish league.
Mbappe bagged a brace in Real Madrid’s 2-0 win against Real Sociedad in their final La Liga game of the season to extend his tally to 31 goals, beating the likes of Mohamed Salah and Victor Gyokeres to the European Golden Shoe. Gyokeres scored 39 goals for his club Sporting Lisbon, but finished behind Mbappe in the Golden Shoe rankings.
The European Golden Shoe winner is decided by rankings, which are calculated by a weighted-points-based system. Goals scored by players in Europe’s top five leagues – the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 earn them 2 points each. Meanwhile, a goal in the other leagues (6th to 22nd) is worth 1.5 points.
Thus, Mbappe finished with 62 points for his 31 goals for Real Madrid, while Gyokeres earned 58.3 points for his 39 goals for Sporting in the Primeira Liga in Portugal. Salah scored 29 league goals for Liverpool, helping them win the Premier League title. Salah won the Premier League Golden Boot for being the top-scorer in the league, however, his 58 points were not enough to secure him the European Golden Shoe.
Mbappe joins Ronaldo in elite list
Mbappe joined the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo in an elite list after claiming his maiden European Golden Shoe for Real Madrid as the French striker became only the third player in the club’s history to bag the top prize. Hugo Sanchez and Cristiano Ronaldo are the only other players to have won the European Golden Shoe with Real Madrid.
Sanchez won the Golden Shoe in the 1989-90 season while Ronaldo won thrice in 2010-11, 2013-14 and the 2014-15 seasons. Mbappe also scripted history by becoming the first player to have scored more than 30 league goals for Real Madrid in his debut season. No other player has managed to reach 30 goals in their debut season for the La Liga giants.
While Mbappe, Gyokeres and Salah shared the top three spots in the European Golden Shoe race, Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski finished 4th with 54 points, followed by Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, who secured 52 points.
