New Delhi: Three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek continued her dominant run at Roland Garros, defeating Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 6-2, 7-5 in a two-hour battle to move into the Round of 16. The 23-year-old Polish star, who is chasing her fifth title in Paris, has now reached the second week of the French Open for the seventh time in her career.

Under the sweltering Parisian sun, Swiatek made a strong start taking the first set without facing a single break point. However, in the second set, Cristian pushed hard forcing Swiatek into long rallies and generating six break-point chances. But the top seed remained calm and fought off every one of them, before breaking Cristian’s serve in the final game to close out the match in straight sets.

“I’m just happy that I was super solid in the last game and didn’t give any free points,” Swiatek said. “She used her chances and went for it every time I gave her a chance. It was a great match and I think pretty entertaining.”

Record broken

Swiatek’s latest win adds to her growing list of milestones. Not only has she tied Monica Seles’ 25-match winning streak at Roland Garros, the second-longest in the Open Era, but she has now also matched a record held by one of the all-time greats. With a 38-2 record in her first 40 main draw matches at the French Open, Swiatek equals Chris Evert for the most wins at this stage in the Open Era. Evert, a seven-time champion in Paris, had long stood alone with that record until now.

Swiatek will now face either Elena Rybakina or 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the Round of 16.

Other matches

Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti battled back from a set and a break down to beat Mariano Navone 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. Musetti’s reward is a fourth-round clash with Holger Rune, who survived a five-set thriller against Quentin Halys, winning 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2.
