New Delhi: The upcoming five-match Test series between India and England will now be played as the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. Previously, the Test series between the two nations in the UK had been played for the Pataudi Trophy, named after the Pataudi family.
The Nawab of Pataudi played for both India and England during the 1930s and 40s, while his son, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, represented India in the 1960s and 70s and was one of the greatest Indian captains. As per the BBC report, the new trophy will be unveiled in the build-up to the first Test, which is scheduled to begin at Headingley in Leeds on June 20.
Sachin Tendulkar still remains the leading run-scorer in Test cricket, amassing 15,921 runs for India in 200 Test matches, after making his debut in 1989. James Anderson is England’s greatest fast bowler, taking 704 wickets after playing 188 Test matches.
Tendulkar and Anderson played 14 Test matches against each other, and the fast bowler has dismissed the legendary batter nine times. Overall, Tendulkar has amassed 208 runs against Anderson in the longest format, averaging 23.11.
It is worth noting that when two countries play Test series on Indian soil, it is known as the ‘Anthony de Mello’ trophy since 1951-52, and at the moment, it is still not clear on whether the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy will be played in India or only used in the series held in England.
The move to honour the legendary cricketers came after the Test series between New Zealand and England was renamed as the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy in November 2024. The Three Lions are the current and final holders of the Patuadi Trophy after the last Test series between both nations ended in a 2-2 draw.
The first Test of the upcoming series will be played at Headingley from June 20, the second Test at Edgbaston from July 2, the third at Lord’s from July 10, the fourth at Old Trafford from July 23, and the last Test at The Oval from July 31.
