New Delhi: World number 361 Frenchwoman Lois Boisson produced the biggest upset of the French Open 2025 with an eye-catching fourth-round victory against third seed Jessica Pegula. Boisson, a wildcard entrant, came into the main draw after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in her knee last year, and never in her wildest dreams would she have imagined a result like this.
Backed by the packed crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier, Boisson registered a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win against the US Open 2024 runner-up. The Frenchwoman, who is making her debut in the main draw of a Grand Slam, had never played an opponent ranked in the world’s top 50 before this week.
The 22-year-old, fighting back from one set down, saved four break points in the decider after she served for the match at 5-4. She eventually sealed the win with a powerful forehand winner.
“I’m not sure what to say. Playing on this court, with this atmosphere, was amazing,” Boisson said.
“I gave my all and in the end I won, which is just incredible. I hope I’m going to win it all!”
In the quarterfinals, Boisson will take on sixth seed Mirra Andreeva, who defeated Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 7-5 to reach the last-8.
Boisson is the lowest-ranked player to reach the French Open quarterfinal since Serena Williams, then ranked 451, reached the last-8 at Roland Garros.
She is also the lowest-ranked player to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since world number 418 Kaia Kanepi at the 2017 US Open.
A remarkable journey
It’s remarkable how Boisson has bounced back from the heartbreak she suffered 12 months ago.
After doing well consistently at WTA 125 tournaments – the third division of women’s tennis – Boisson was given a wildcard for the French Open 2024.
However, a week before the action at Roland Garros kicked off, Boisson tore her ACL in her left knee. Not only did she miss her home Grand Slam, but she was also sidelined for nine months.
Back on the famed clay-courts of Roland Garros, she is making the most of the second opportunity.
In another last-16 clash, 2025 Australian Open champ Madison Keys set up an all-American quarterfinal against Coco Gauff. The seventh seed defeated Hailey Baptiste 6-3. 7-5 to reach the last 8.
