New Delhi: Middlesbrough FC sacked manager Michael Carrick on Wednesday after the Championship club missed out on a play-off place during the 2024/25 season. The former Manchester United and England midfielder, who previously had a stint as caretaker manager at Old Trafford, had been in charge at Boro since October 2022.
He guided Middlesbrough to the Championship play-offs in the 2022/23 season, but the club has missed out on the top six for the second consecutive year. Carrick started his coaching career with Manchester United after retiring in 2018.
He had a spell as the caretaker manager of the team in November 2021 after the club sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He left Manchester United when Ralf Rangnick was appointed in December. Boro appointed Carrick as the manager in the following year after a disastrous start to the season, with the club in the relegation zone.
He turned their fortunes and helped the club to get into promotion contention. They finished fourth in the table but were beaten by Coventry City in the semi-finals. In 2023-24, Boro finished eighth, four points behind the final play-off place, and in 2024-25, they were again four points behind the play-off spot.
Boro were challenging for a play-off spot for most of the 2024-25 season, but one win in their last six matches proved to be costly.
